Occupying the corner of one of the new high rises along the stretch connecting Downtown to the East Side, Alderaan Coffee (1560 N. Water St.) is a place of hard-edged surfaces—concrete block walls, terrazzo floors and a cement and wood counter. You can start the day there with a hearty bowl of oatmeal topped with shaved almonds and golden raisins and served with a glass of warm milk (nice touch!). Croissants and muffins are also available. The coffee is good and strong. Alderaan is open Monday through Friday, 6 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m.
