Authors Michael Zadoorian and Peter Coviello will appear together at Boswell Book Co. at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15, to discuss how music inspired their new books. In Beautiful Music, author Michael Zadoorian, whose 2009 novel The Leisure Seeker was recently released as a major motion picture starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland, delivers a poignant tale of a boy’s coming of age in 1970s Detroit and the metaphorical cogency of losing (and finding) yourself in music. Zadoorian’s young protagonist faces a tumultuous adolescence growing up in the Motor City at a time of racial tension and high school bullies, made bearable only by the saving grace of music. Peter Coviello, a recent fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University, weaves his musical message throughout the heart-rending new memoir Long Players. By beautifully illustrating the transformative power and tremendous impact of music, Coviello unfolds a deeply personal tale of loss, grief and ultimately, the healing power of music.
