Voices Found Repertory continues along the revenge drama theme, following Titus Andronicus, with the once-controversial Greek classic Medea.
Medea (Cara Johnston) has helped her husband, the Greek hero Jason (Andy Montano), and fellows on the Argo through various trials with her magic that culminate to the acquisition of the Golden Fleece. All seems to be well for the couple and their two young boys until word gets out that Jason is leaving her to marry the daughter of King Creon (William Molitor), Glauce (Catalina Ariel). After days of wallowing in their home, much to the concern of fellow women in the town, Jason confronts Medea after she has been exiled from the kingdom of Corinth. Bitter insults are exchanged as Jason proclaims his actions are for the sake of the children, so that they may gain prestige to the family name and one day rule Corinth. The once distraught Medea then begins to formulate her plan of revenge against Jason.
Medea proposes that the proper way to dismantle one’s enemy is to sever every tie they hold dear in their life, regardless of the fate of the innocent. Johnston is cold-blooded in her portrayal of Medea, but still shows signs of humanism as she physically thrashes back and forth in her decision of taking lives. As the lights dim, the room is silent and there is a chill in the air. It would be best to sleep with a light on after watching director Jennifer Vosters’ tense adaptation.
