Chair City Cookout Sunday, Aug. 5 James Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden 5634 Evergreen Drive, Wilson
Enjoy an afternoon of art making, music, food and refreshments at the Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden in the town of Wilson, Wis. (just south of Sheboygan). Art-making activities include demonstrations by local artists, plein air painting and making miniature chairs—the latter a reflection of James Tellen’s work in chair manufacturing. This event is part of a series of Wandering Wisconsin Roadside Events offered by the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. Visit wanderingwisconsin.org for more information.
‘Mathew Hintz: Spirit of the Open Road’ Aug. 8-Oct. 20 Brooks Stevens Gallery, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design 273 E. Erie St.
MIAD’s newest exhibit coincides with Harley-Davidson’s 115th Anniversary Celebration, the latter being observed throughout the greater Milwaukee area in early September. Mathew Hintz’s passion for motorcycles and transportation design began when he was interning with the famous American motorcycle company 20 years ago. It was an opportunity that “gave Mathew content and purpose behind his artwork,” according to co-curator Adam Meurer, a fellow MIAD alum and the artist’s former representative. Hintz-designed T-shirts, logos, graphics, medallions and other merchandise sold through Harley-Davidson dealerships will be on exhibit, as well as a painting of a 2015 Road Glide that was featured on the cover of HOG Magazine. Visit miad.edu for more information.

‘Fatal Attraction—Public Art and Milwaukee with Tom Bamberger’ Wednesday, Aug. 8 North Point Lighthouse 2650 N. Wahl Ave.
Tom Bamberger—whose photographs have been shown at many museums, including New York City’s Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, presents a brief history of the national public art movement in this lecture taking place 7-8:30 p.m. Not only will he lecture on public art nationally, but he’ll also focus on a history of public art in Milwaukee and reflect on what landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted—designer of Milwaukee’s Lake Park—might think of his park today.
