As part of the Milwaukee Film Festival’s new GenreQueer programming track, When the Beat Drops delves into a dance style called “bucking.” The dance originated in the 1990s gay subculture of the American South and found a welcome home in the LGBTQ clubs of Atlanta. Many proponents of the athletic mash-up of break dancing and African kinetics worked as teachers and other professionals by day—and would have drawn fire had their employees known how they moved at night. The director of When the Beat Drops, Jamal Sims, calls the movie a “passion project” and comes to the project after choreographing routines for Madonna and Jennifer Lopez.
