They were waiting outside—two men in black, their faces hidden by white masks. They were armed with spray bottles and stood next to the cart where the goods would be left—the drop off, the fish fry.
Santino’s Little Italy (352 E. Stewart St.) wasn’t best known as a place for a Friday fish fry but are offering one that stands out in the City of Fish Frys. The popular Bayview restaurant maintains a limited menu with daily pizza specials (derived from their extensive house menu) plus fish on Friday. The fish fry (the men in black were waiting, scanning the street for the pick-up car) is generously portioned—a half dozen pieces of lightly breaded and seasoned perch resting on a bed of rosemary-roasted red potatoes in their skins. “Sure, we can give you a Caesar salad,” the voice online said. And sure, even if it wasn’t the daily special, they were able to produce a Greek pizza with Kalamata olives, feta, mozzarella and artichokes on a crust made from the finest Italian flour.
Santino’s excellent service and food continue during these hard times. I can’t wait until the interior reopens with its endless loop of Sophia Loren films running on the screens above the bar.
