There’s nothing like a little Easter cheer to put a “spring” in your step. Grab your jellybeans (or someone else’s) and rise from the dead Milwaukee style. Come out of the closet, do a beatnik bash or join a brunch bunch with any of Milwaukee’s “hoppy” happenings. No matter what you decide, make it a bunny-licious pastel party with the Easter-week events listed here. First, however, let’s read a letter from a chicky who isn’t particularly keen on the Easter scene.
Dear Ruthie,
My girlfriend insists we celebrate Easter with her family. They are Bible-bangers and insist we attend a church service followed by a fellowship breakfast. Did I mention I’m an Atheist? Why should I adjust my beliefs to make them happy? I offered to spend the day with them after the services, but my girlfriend and her family aren’t having it. I feel like I have to stand my ground and don’t understand why that’s wrong. HELP!
Thanks,
Atheist Annie

Dear Hell-Bound,
I’ve never understood all of Easter’s religious practices myself. I mean, history teaches us that a prophet named Jesus was nailed to a cross, resulting in a horrible death. How does giving up strawberry Starbursts for Lent make up for that? I don’t get it. For some folks, however, this is important stuff that enriches their lives…and that’s good!
You have your own thoughts about religion, and that’s good, too! You’ve got two choices: Either stick to your morals and suffer the consequences, or suck it up and attend the church service. Just let me know if you choose the latter so I can avoid the lightening bolts and locusts hitting that particular church. Have a heart-to-heart with your lady love and take things from there. Am I going to tell you what to do? No. You know the answer in your heart. Take a look inside and listen to that little voice…assuming it’s not Satan’s.
April 2: Coming Out Support Group at Milwaukee LGBT Community Center (1110 N. Market St.): Come out, come out, wherever you are! Whether struggling with stepping out of the closet, questioning your orientation, dealing with gender identity or simply looking for some fellowship with others in the same situation, this group is for you! Open to individuals 16 years and older, this helpful group offers a life-changing turning point. Call 414-292-3069 for more on the 6 to 8 p.m. meeting.
April 3: Beat Series at Art*Bar (722 E. Burleigh St.): The second installment of this alternatively artsy evening features performers celebrating the best of Milwaukee’s spoken word, rap and poetry scene. A dance band jazzes up the 9:30 p.m. night. Best of all, there’s no cover charge! Come see why the Beat Series has been a Milwaukee staple for the past seven years.
April 4: Madonnarama Party at D.I.X. (739 S. First St.): Long live the Queen of Pop! Celebrate the ravishing rebel and your inner diva by dancing the night away to a catalog of Madonna hits spanning more than 30 years. As if a guest DJ and drink specials aren’t enough, the 7 p.m. party includes opportunities to win Madonna’s Rebel Heart album (yes…I still call them “albums”) and tickets to her upcoming tour. What are you looking at? It’s time to vogue, damn it!
April 5: Easter Brunch at The Pfister Hotel (424 E. Wisconsin Ave.): The Pfister Hotel has been a local landmark in Cream City for decades (and not because of it’s naughty name). For $52.95, diners can enjoy appetizers, a sculpted ice seafood buffet, artisanal breads and numerous stations, including custom-made omelets, pasta dishes and other brunch delights. Bring the kids ($24.95) because the Easter Bunny will be on hand to welcome them to the craft table as well as the dessert buffet. Call 414-935-5950 for reservations.
