Even as his profile has grown and he's shared stages with bands like the Violent Femmes, Milwaukee singer-songwriter Brett Newski has stayed true to his busker roots. From time to time he likes to play at venues that might, as he puts it, "need a boost to morale."
His latest stop on that good-will tour this week took him and drummer Matt Spatola to one of Milwaukee County's less likely venues: The Family Dollar in Cudahy, where he played for an audience of a few staffers and one very good-natured lady who, despite being on her way out the door, was more amenable to the audience-participation portion of the song than most concertgoers. And unlike Newski's performance at Wal-Mart earlier this summer, he didn't get kicked out.
