Born and raised on the South Side, Marisabel Cabrera’s family fought to get by and, more than once, had to rely on a local church for food and other necessities; thus, she became aware at a very early age about how difficult life can be for those with little to fall back on. “I remember my parents constantly emphasizing that the surest way out of poverty is through a good education,” she says, and credits a quality public education for getting her to where she is today. Cabrera took her parents advice and earned a bachelor’s degree from UW-Madison and law degree from Michigan State University.
Cabrera is bright, hardworking and committed to making her community better by serving in several capacities. She is an entrepreneur, immigration attorney and former chair of the Latino Caucus of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. She’s a member of Voces de la Frontera and has served as a member and vice chair of the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission. She explains that she is running for the State Assembly to ensure that “each and every person—regardless of nationality, gender or orientation—has the same opportunities, services and protections to prosper and safely enjoy their home and community.”
