James Vance and Milwaukee illustrator Dan E. Burr’s Kings in Disguise has been hailed as one of the greatest graphic novels. Their Depression-era narrative continues with On the Ropes. The story is almost fable-like and set to meticulously detailed black-and-white drawings of the characters and their hardscrabble milieu. A well-researched history of labor struggles in the 1930s and populated by well-developed characters, On the Ropes could be good source material for a film.
