Rendered in an unusual format, a fold-open accordion within a hard cover, the graphic novel Undocumented has a narrative all too common in today’s America.
Its protagonist, Juan, is a Mexican migrant working in the U.S. without documentation under an immigration system whose failures are massive. He represents millions of hardworking migrants—the people who cook our food, harvest our crops and haul our goods—that are in increasing jeopardy.
The accordion format and the imagery are steeped in Mexican visual traditions as old as the Mayans yet Undocumented also looks as contemporary as today.
