A contemporary dance company based in New York City and the recipient of prestigious national and international honors in recent years, Camile A. Brown & Dancers will present two concerts of new and older work at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan on April 21 and 23. The company’s theatrical style mixes ballet, tap, hip-hop, modern and African dance idioms in daring ways.
The program features Brown’s newest dance, "Black Girl: Linguistic Play," a multimedia work inspired by the writings of Angela Davis, Toni Morrison and Melissa Harris-Perry that draws on the playtime rhythms, games, songs and dances that form the childhood context for an African American girl’s process of self-discovery. The show also features excerpts from Brown’s acclaimed works "New Second Line" and "Mr. Tol E. RAncE."
The Tuesday, April 21 performance begins at 6:30 p.m. and includes a talk with the artists. It’s a shortened program designed for families. The Thursday, April 23 performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and is a full, evening-length performance.
The Center’s café will feature a special NYC-inspired dinner menu prior to Thursday’s performance. Reservations are recommended. For more information, call 920-458-6144 or visit jmkac.com. The JMK Art Center is located at 608 New York Ave. in Sheboygan.
