It’s got to be a huge emotional collapse to lose a child at any age. Losing one at the age of four is unimaginable, though. At that age, they’re just starting to ask questions. They’re just starting to form a comprehensive understanding of the world. They’re actively becoming people. What happens when they vanish?
David Lindsay-Abaire’s Rabbit Hole is about a couple in their late 30s who lose a son when he’s four. They both struggle to cope with the loss in different ways. This is a deeply heartfelt drama that will be making its way to another local stage this month as Heidi Salter directs a production of the drama for Imagination Theatre of Germantown. Mark Neufang and Kristen Witt Mickie play the couple in a production directed by Heidi Salter. I’m not familiar with Mickie, but I’ve seen Neufang in a number of very heavy dramatic productions over the years. His most memorable appearance to date was as a man dealing with an entirely different kind of loss in a recent production of The Normal Heart. Neufang can do remarkable things with this kind of role.
Imagination Theatre of Germantown’s production of Rabbit Hole runs April 17-26 at the Lutheran Church of the Living Christ in Germantown. For more information, visit itogonline.org.
