In junior high school I remember taking a literature course that asked the class to, among other things, compare and contrast Charlotte’s Web and A Day No Pigs Would Die. Years later, the two are more or less fused in my mind. It always amazes me that so much cheery children’s fare can be made of such a sad coming-of-age story until I remember Charlotte’s Web didn’t end like A Day No Pigs Would Die.
The triumphant tale of a pig that doesn’t get slaughtered and the spider who helped keep him alive finds a local staging early next month at the Schauer Arts Center. E.B. White’s classic children’s book is condensed into a 60-minute production courtesy of the touring children’s company Theatreworks USA. Recommended for kids in K-5, the production will be performed May 1 at 7 p.m. For more information, visit the schauercenter.org.
