Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless (1960) set the pace for a new generation of filmmakers. The 1983 remake by writer-director Jim McBride was less influential or enduring, but cleverly retooled the story of crime and romance for the Reagan era and for Hollywood sensibilities. Richard Gere was more endearing and likable than Godard’s amoral villain; he’s a charming small-time crook with a taste for rockabilly and a burglar’s light touch who gets in over his head.
