The Runaways were an all-female rock band manufactured in the mid-1970s by Svengali Kim Fowley. He got one thing right: choosing Joan Jett as guitarist and vocalist. Well, maybe two things: Even though Fowley calculated on exploitative sex as their appeal, he was correct in seeing that women would eventually break into the boys’ club of rock and roll music. Soon enough, Jett split from the band and established her own career, which peaked on the pop charts with her signature song, the 1981 hit “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll.” Kevin Kerslake’s documentary Bad Reputation includes dynamic concert footage as well as interviews with Jett as she traces her trajectory from teenager in ’70s Hollywood.
Also screened at 9:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 28, Oriental Theatre West; and 3:45 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31 at Times Cinema.
