Canada’s Adham Shaikh grew up with electronica but was also drawn to the music of his Kashmiri-Indian heritage. Unlike many ethnic-fusion albums released under the marketing moniker of world music, Shaikh delivers a powerful convergence of influences. His dance floor rhythms and occasional raps are happily and fully married to eastern melodies and harmonies. As the title suggests, Basswalla lives in the lower registers of the sound system, maintaining a driving throb beneath the ice cool dynamics.
