Traditional Japanese culture has inspired Western artists since the late 19th century. For one recent example, check out Illustrations by a young Canadian jazz player, Andrew McAnsh. The Toronto trumpeter wrote the music during a Japanese sojourn and ascribes credit to the influence of Zen Buddhism. Some moments suggest this, while others point the way to the cool and post-cool jazz of Miles Davis.
