Basia Derlak is an outstanding vocalist for emotional range. Sassy, insistent, reflective and breathless, she fronts a Polish trio whose percussive funky jazz is rooted in folk-based melodies and embraces Eastern klezmer modes. The lyrics are in Polish, but the snaky rhythms and the tone of Derlak’s voice cuts across language barriers.
