On her first album in several years, Russian expatriate Julia Vorontsova draws on her country’s bardic tradition of folk music with poetic lyrics that allude to contemporary life. Sung in Russian but recorded in Los Angeles with a small ensemble of talented accompanists, the music is profoundly soulful. Electric guitarist Zeke Zima helps set Vorontsova’s songs in a rock context.
