Kings Go Forth vocalist Blackwolf and veteran multi-instrumentalist Scott Finch join forces with drummer Derrick “Greyhound” McDowell. The trio takes a left turn from the Kings’ Daptone retro sounds to a heavier sound of rock that recalls Funkadelic.
The title track and “Good Woman Down” crank up the energy level. Throughout the album, Finch’s wah-wah guitar and Hammond organ edge toward psychedelic. With “We Have Overcome,” the band blends inspiration from gospel soul and The Beatles. Combining tension and release with dramatic dynamics, Blackwolf’s impassioned vocals and Finch’s piano on “You Don’t Have to Love Me” make this the album’s centerpiece.
