Of Montreal had a landmark 2007, riding a wave of praise for their stellar Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, a richly orchestrated synthesis of modern electro-pop and classic glam-rock revolving around a poignantly understated account of singer Kevin Barnes’ battle with depression. This year the band returned with the song-structure-defying Skeletal Lamping, either a manic mind-fuck or a colossal headache depending on your disposition, as they continued to build word of mouth for their theatrical, ever-changing live spectacles. Already infamous for on-stage full-frontal nudity, this month Barnes one-upped himself in New York by riding into the Roseland Ballroom on a towering white stallion. How he acquired a real, live horse is anyone’s guess, but it’s unlikely he’ll be able to repeat the stunt when Of Montreal plays the Pabst Theater tonight at 8 p.m.

Dr Bonds is correct; there are a multitude of problems and challenges that face the city. He neglects, however, to address the serious questions about the School Board’s control over the schools. Should the School Board remain in control when the graduation rate hovers around 60% (the state average is 88%)? Should the School Board remain in control when the average 2008 ACT test score for MPS students is 17.5 (out of 36)? Should the School Board remain in control when 46% of MPS students were habitually truant during the 2006-2007academic year? Should the School Board remain in control of the schools when the district fails to provide the necessary services for special needs or at-risk students? Should the School Board remain in control of the schools when the achievement gap between white and African-American students is now the worst in the nation? It is apparent that the students, parents, teachers and greater Milwaukee community have been going in the wrong direction under the wrong leadership for too long. It’s time for a change!
