Wisconsin is lucky to have a progressive like Gwen Moore representing the state in Congress. After more than a decade as a state senator—where she fiercely fought against voter ID laws designed to disenfranchise black voters—Moore became the first African American from Wisconsin elected to the House of Representatives in 2004. Since then, she’s fought passionately for her district, while making a name for herself as a tireless advocate for women, workers, students and the poor.
Moore has the courage of her convictions. Few representatives have been more outspoken about the need for income equality. In 2014, she was arrested for peacefully protesting for a living wage along with fast-food workers. She’s also been a solid line of defense as Republicans have chipped away at reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, welfare protections, education and healthcare coverage.
Moore’s primary opponent, Gary George, a former state senator who lost his seat in a 2003 recall election, is challenging her for the third time in six years. He was not a serious candidate in those previous races and is not one now. With Donald Trump and his congressional allies waging war on core American values, Congress needs all the progressive voices it can get. It has an especially strong one in Moore. She has more than earned another term.
