SaintA began in 1850 as an orphanage that cared for children whose parents died of cholera. Today the nonprofit is a multifaceted service agency nationally recognized for its trauma-informed care for children and young adults. The organization’s major programs include Wraparound Milwaukee care coordination, child welfare and family services, foster care and adoption services, independent living services for homeless young adults who have aged out of foster care and have a mental illness, school-based services and training and short-term residential treatment for boys 5-16 with serious emotional and behavioral challenges. SaintA provides family-centered care and education services throughout Southeast Wisconsin, coming in contact with more than 5,000 people a day.
“What sets us apart is the long-term dedication to helping children and its special focus on trauma-informed care,” says SaintA Director of Marketing and Communications Linda Steiner.
She added, “The real heroes are our foster parents, who are a critical part of our team in caring for children. They are angels that open up their homes and hearts for kids in need of loving, caring homes. It’s quite amazing.”
The organization is seeking donations of bus passes, gift cards, tickets to local museums and sporting events and school supplies. Volunteers are also utilized throughout the year to help with sorting toys for a holiday toy drive, fundraising events, grounds keeping and general maintenance projects. SaintA is hosting its 165th anniversary celebration Nov. 10 at Marcus Center’s Bradley Pavilion (929 N. Water St.), which will feature speaker Bruce Perry, an international expert on neurobiology and its impact on behavior. The money raised will go toward the nonprofit’s independent living program.
