Richard Kadrey
Killing Pretty, the seventh book in Richard Kadrey’s highly acclaimed Sandman Slim series, reunites readers with anti-hero James “Sandman Slim” Stark and the dark underworld of a paranormal Los Angeles teeming with cosmic forces. In this latest installment, Stark enters into a partnership with Death himself, who has unwittingly taken human form.
When Death—or at least the body he is residing in—has his heart savagely ripped out, rendering him unable to perform his job, Stark is inevitably ready to step in to solve the murder and return Death to his proper place. After his own long stint in Hell, Stark is already familiar with the necromancers, demons and ghosts that he will have to face in working for Death. As he wades through L.A.’s magical underworld, Stark visits hideaways crowded with vampires as well as steamy fight and sex clubs. Along the way, he meets a mysterious girl—the only person who ever outmaneuvered Death. This dark urban fantasy will satisfy fans of the series with its beguiling storylines, high-octane scenes and incogitable plot twists. Filled with the usual clever Sandman Slim banter and pop culture references, this dark tale is more than simple noir fantasy—it is also a story of Sandman Slim’s own personal transformation.
Kadrey is a San Francisco-based novelist, freelance writer and photographer. His first Sandman Slim novel was published in 2009 and earned the distinction as one of Barnes & Noble’s “Best Paranormal Fantasy Novels of the Last Decade.” Kadrey will visit Boswell Book Co. at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 17.
