Did you grow up on Milwaukee’s East Side during the ‘60s and ‘70s? For the past eight years, a group of your former running buddies have been organizing an annual reunion of sorts. Beginning at 1 p.m. this Sunday, a group of old East Siders will convene at the Cass St. playground for an informal game of ball. “No one runs too well anymore,” says organizer John Torres, “and there are always about thirty people in the outfield, but the game is really just an excuse to celebrate friendships that have lasted decades. People come from as far away as California.” The game begins with a remembrance of friends who have died in the past year and ends with a group picture and dinner at Pitch’s Lounge and Restaurant (1801 N. Humboldt Ave.) Anyone who grew up on the East Side in the ‘60s and ‘70s is welcome to join.
On Friday, July 17 at 5 p.m. the 4th Annual Yesterday's Negro League Baseball Players Benefit Foundation Banquet will be held at the African American Women's Center (3020 W. Vliet St.). The $10 ticket includes a banquet, an opportunity to meet players (including the only female athlete to have played in the Negro Leagues) and participation in the silent auction of items donated by the Milwaukee Brewers. Tickets must be purchased by July 16 and can be done so here.
