Unless it’s to send a pigskin between the triumphant arms of a goal post, Americans prefer to use their hands when playing ball-based sports. Nevertheless, soccer – or ‘football’ as it is known just about everywhere else – remains the world’s most popular sport. With three upcoming events, a fervent contingent of Milwaukeeans is promoting the recreational and competitive use of the lower body.
The Milwaukee Barons are an offshoot of the Milwaukee Soccer Development Group, a non-profit dedicated to the establishment of a professional soccer team in Wisconsin. The secret weapon of this grassroots movement is that special variety of passion characteristic of soccer fans, which, when unchecked leads to violent hooliganism. The Barons are gathering at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10th in the Great Hall of the Best Place to demonstrate to city officials, sports fans and investors that Wisconsin can support a high-level professional outdoor soccer team. The meeting will also release details on the Barons “Miller Park March” during the International Soccer Match between Newcastle United F.C. Vs. Club Atlas, being held on Tuesday, July 14 at Miller Park.
Bradford Beach boasts Blue Wave Certification, meaning it has met the standards of the first national environmental certification for beaches that was designed to help maintain robust, healthy and vibrant beaches. Part of Bradford’s robust vibrancy is due to its men’s and co-ed sand soccer leagues, which do battle on Sunday afternoons in July and August. Sand soccer operates according to rules different than the traditional sport. Teams are made up of five players and up to five subs (team members can vary from week-to-week) and matches last for three, nine-minute periods. Registering a team costs $500, but lone wolves can register for $60 and will be placed with a team. The games begin on July 5, so round up some pals and register here.

Held on Friday, June 19, at Brown Deer Park, this will be the first year that Playworks is encouraging unaffiliated individuals to sign on as “free agents.” Over 200 of Milwaukee's entrepreneurs, attorneys, corporate vice presidents, managers and other community leaders will be participating in the tournament as well as the home-run derby and silent auction of packages such as a golf foursome from the Riverside Club of Mequon, to which you could invite three of your new friends. Act fast: registration ends June 5.
