Presumably secrets have been around in Austin, Texas have been around since . . . Austin has been in Texas. People will always have secrets. This is nothing new. The idea of bringing them to the stage anonymously is relatively new, however. Austin Secrets been going on at the appropriately named Hideout Theatre in Austin since 2010. This coming year, Austin Secrets comes to Milwaukee in the form of Milwaukee Secrets. It’s sort of a franchise thing like Bye-Bye Liver.
The premise is simple: audience members and other Milwaukeeans submit secrets. Those secrets are then presented onstage. Serious secrets become improvised drama. Silly secrets become improv comedy. With the right kind of secret and the right kind of cast, the best stuff might exist somewhere between drama and comedy. It’s a simple idea. Precisely why it had to come to Milwaukee by way of Austin is...probably a secret.
They’re looking to cast the show Aug. 2 from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. The show will consist of a rotating cast of 15 performers. Each show will be booked with a maximum of eight performers. There will be a small stipend for performers. The first scheduled “season” of Milwaukee Secrets runs Friday nights in September through October. Rehearsals will be twice per week next month.
