Quasimondo Milwaukee Physical Theatre presents an encore of its Kamikaze Cutesauce: Cosplay Club in Milwaukee this weekend before heading off to participate in the New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC) Aug. 27-30. FringeNYC—one of North America’s largest multi-arts and theater fringe festivals—uses a jury-based selection process and Kamikaze Cutesauce is one of 200 shows that will be performed in Downtown Manhattan during the festival’s two-week run.
Quasimondo artistic director as well as creator and director of Kamikaze Cutesauce, Brian Rott, says, “When we opened the show in February there was a consensus among our ensemble that we had created something special, something we needed to share. Two cast members came to me with a proposal to apply to FringeNYC and I agreed, but it seemed like a long shot. Three months later we were notified that the show was selected from more than 800 submissions from around the world to participate. All 10 members of the original performing ensemble agreed to return and we jumped back in. I can’t say enough about this ensemble and their dedication to this piece. This is our first foray into Fringe, but a valuable exercise for our company in bringing the work we create in Milwaukee to wider audiences. “
Rott continues, “I think that Kamikaze is successful because it’s ass-kicking-over-the-top-samurai-superheroine exciting, but more importantly an accessible and honest reflection of our times. Whether or not you’re familiar with cos-play, anyone can relate to the multiple roles we play day to day. Kamikaze is a reminder that we have the liberty to choose those roles. I’m excited that Milwaukee has a second chance to see this show.”
