Despite the faux-hippie dialogue, this 1968 period piece from the intersection of Haight and Ashbury has many things going for it. Starters: Jack Nicholson, whose rock star swagger cuts through the bull (“You don’t sound so good without the acid,” he quips). Cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs shoots at slightly askew angles and can’t help but record some of the psychedelic visual ambiance of ’60s San Francisco. The soundtrack features The Seeds and The Strawberry Alarm Clock.
