This adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel revisits two of his favorite romantic themes. First, an attractive pair of young lovers attempts to reconcile their seemingly incompatible backgrounds. Here, championship bull rider Luke Collins (Scott Eastwood) crushes on art student Sophia (Britt Robertson), who finds herself equally hooked on Luke (who doesn’t fit into her girl-takes-on-the-big-city plan). A second common Sparks device finds the couple entangled with an elderly widower (Alan Alda), whose life has been defined by his love for Ruth, a woman he fought hard to win and keep because they too were from different worlds. Just as you guessed, it falls to one older and wiser to teach a younger generation how to nurture and sustain a special love.
