Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers goes up for auction at Christie’s London; cut to the artist and his brother arguing while the voice of the auctioneer remains audible as he eggs sale numbers higher and higher. It’s a smart opening for Robert Altman’s 1990 film on the uncomfortable intersection of art and business. Eschewing the clichés of biographical movies, Vincent & Theo is a memorable character study staring Tim Roth and Paul Rhys in the title roles.
