If it’s happening here in Wisconsin, think of what voter suppression looks like in that Southern-fried Dixieland of limited suffrage. Anne de Mare’s Capturing the Flag documents the efforts by four lawyers who traveled to Cumberland County, N.C., in the months before the 2016 election. With cameras in tow, those activists went to churches and street corners in a campaign to mobilize voters and increase awareness of the steps needed to cast a ballot. The message of Capturing the Flag is optimistic, but the underlying theme is sinister: There are some in this country who—knowing they can never gain a majority—are happy to diminish democracy if it helps them achieve their ends. For some Americans, the right to vote remains under threat.
Also screened at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27, Avalon Theater; and 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31, Oriental Theatre West.
