This article is part of our Milwaukee Film Festival daily preview series. The series is brought to you by Associated Bank. Transit Sunday, Oct. 21 @ 7:15 p.m. Avalon Theater
Refugees seeking transit papers and visas; it was the narrative gear on which turned one of the most beloved films ever produced in Hollywood, Casablanca. It was also the subject of refugee Jewish author Anna Seghers’ 1942 truer to life novel about a German concentration camp escapee trapped in Nazi-occupied France and desperate for passage to the New World. Stripping that novel of its period details and setting it in the near-present, German director Christian Petzold (Jerichow) imbues the story with the chilling suggestion that history is in danger of repeating itself—once again—in a world where anti-immigrant and rightwing populist sentiments are on the rise. And, yes, as in Casablanca, there is a love story in Transit starring a gifted pair of German actors: Franz Rogowski and Paula Beer.
Also screened at noon, Wednesday, Oct. 24, Jan Serr Studio Cinema; and 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 26, Oriental Theatre East.
