Back at the Staircase—the closing night feature of this year’s Milwaukee Film Festival by Milwaukee director Drew Britton—was an official selection at the 2018 Slamdance Film Festival. Back at the Staircase is a dysfunctional family drama surrounding an unpleasant bunch of lowlifes whose falling-down drunk matriarch falls down the staircase while celebrating the release of one of their own—a reprobate charged with arson but free after the judge declares a mistrial. Her injuries trigger shouting and recriminations from the clan’s angry narcissists; could this be Dogme 95 transposed to America’s Heartland?
