With female and Hispanic singers both rarities in commercial radio country nowadays, Milwaukee’s Alyssia Dominguez offers double the diversity on her four-song debut, The Reason. But there’s no need for affirmative action with music this appealing. Dominguez’s vocal warmth; lyrics by local Americana singer-songwriter Keith Pulvermacher; and a savvy combination of current pop country flavor, the genre’s more traditional leanings and some of Dominguez’s Latina heritage add up to a premiere polished as anything coming out of Nashville, but with more personality than much of the city’s country product. A full album should further define what’s already a unique presence in her genre. As a taste of what should portend even better things to come, this is reason enough to pay attention to Dominiguez.
