The third album by southeastern Wisconsin native Jupiter in Velvet is still rooted in the artsier, heavier and more futuristically flamboyant side of ’70s U.K. glam rock, but The World Didn’t Start With U reveals growth toward a more danceable aesthetic. True to form, he’s still an Anglophile inspired by such ’80s acts as Pop Will Eat Itself and This Petrol Emotion and The Cult. It may be anyone’s guess as to just how far his tongue resides in his cheek for some of the more fanciful numbers on peace, love and stardom, but he keeps up the fun for the entirety of a 12-song album. It all begs for an elaborate touring stage presentation, probably involving at least one spaceship and an abundance of glitter. Whether that ever occurs, the music on World can easily soundtrack the wanderings of one’s own imagination.
