One of the prerequisites for success as a trap producer is prolificacy: You’ve got be to able to churn out a ton of music incredibly fast. That hasn’t been a problem for Milwaukee’s LeanBeatz. Over the last couple of years he’s been one of the city’s most efficient producers, farming out tracks to rappers like Kane, Ju Preach, EMAAD, Marratedr, BoodahDARR and Sharrod Sloans.
On LeanBeatz’s new Also Known as Leantoven, the rapper/producer’s first full-length project under his own name in a year, several of those guys repay the favor, lending their voices to Lean’s terse, vibey music. The standout here is the Kane and Munch Lauren feature “Tester,” a clappy club track in the spirit of Tyga’s recent hit “Taste,” but the entire record casts a spell, and there’s something hypnotic about the contrast between Lean’s groggy voice and his alert percussion—he’s got an ear for roomy, lustrous drums. Another highlight: “Tha Carter,” an EMAAD-assisted slab of Latin trap with a beat that flatters all involved.
