Guest clarinetist Michel Lethiec joins the Fine Arts Quartet for the ensemble’s season finale. Of famed composer Gioachino Rossini’s mere handful of non-operatic works is his Introduction, Theme and Variations for Clarinet and Orchestra (pared down for this concert to string quartet), but even this piece was derived from his two-act opera, La Donna del Lago (1819). Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s glorious 1789 Clarinet Quintet in A Major has been described by musicologist Alfred Einstein as a “chamber work of the finest kind.” Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer David Del Tredici composed his neo-Romantic quintet Magyar Madness around an extensive, ebullient “Grand Rando a la Hongroise” finale.
