Growing-up entirely outside religion, I always had a problem with the idea of heaven. Anything done for an eternity would be hell. Death is such a powerful motivator. It’s difficult to imagine a world without it being anything other than lifeless and listless. No matter how nice, any heaven would be populated by lifeless zombies who did nothing but longingly watch the world of the living. I was in first grade when I was trying to explain this to a classmate on a playground at recess.
Okay, so I was kind of a weird kid. Still—the idea of heaven is very vivid for a huge portion of the population. Christian author C.S. Lewis wrote a story about a group of people on a bus bound for heaven. The guy who wrote the Narnia books also wrote the story of a group of people on a bus bound for heaven. It’s an interesting contrast. Those on the bus have to figure out whether or not they really want to go in The Great Divorce. Fellowship Performing Arts' professional stage adaptation of that story is touring the country. The production makes it to Milwaukee this weekend as the Pabst Theatre welcomes C.S. Lewis’ story.
