Titus Andronicus is thought to have been Shakespeare’s first tragedy. It is one of his least-respected plays. Back then bloody revenge drama was popular. So it’s possible this was Shakespeare’s attempt to sell tickets without regard to artistic merit. It was said to have been extremely popular back in Shakespeare’s time. This might have been William Shakespeare doing his best Michael Bay impression. Naturally it’s a good work to twist into a lighthearted comedic mood. This is precisely what Boozy Bard Productions will be doing early next month with its one-weekend-only Shakespeare Raw staging.
Shakespeare Raw has a group of performers familiarizing themselves with a script prior to the performance, then drawing characters out of a hat to see who plays what. They’re given five minutes to get into character and the show starts.
Boozy Bard’s Titus Andronicus runs June 1-3 at the Best Place Tavern in the Historic Pabst Brewery on 901 W. Juneau Ave. Admission is half price if you come in cooking attire. How could this NOT be fun?
