Timothy Cobb Fine Arts’ “2d/3d” explores the compelling connections between geometry, natural forms, and the cast-off and re-imagined vestiges of industry. The six artists featured are Dianne Baker, John Balsley, Oliver Benson, Chip Gianakos, Mike Nolte and Estherly Allen.
Nolte’s whimsical collection of sculptural insects made from discarded machine parts and rusted hand tools is not to be missed—just try to walk away without a smile on your face. Likewise celebrating the natural world is Allen’s Green Piece, an uplifting wood, metal and paint sculpture depicting many little songbirds alit on a tree. Benson, the show’s only strictly 2D artist, furnishes geometric paintings, including the large oil-on-canvas Newtonian Conundrum VVVVV. The painter employs stark colors, precisely measured shapes (here pentagrams) and color blending so subtle it seems to augment the eye’s very perception of light.
