John Singleton made history with his 1991 debut film Boyz N The Hood, becoming the first black nominee for the directing Oscar. Singleton’s tale of three friends coming of age in gang-laden South Central L.A. also introduced audiences to a pre-Jerry Maguirre Cuba Gooding Jr., who, in the days before Boat Trip and Daddy Day Camp, proved himself something of a powerhouse actor.
