Like a friend of a friend asked to join a bowling team only after Tom sprained his wrist and Carter realized he had other commitments on Thursdays, The Avett Brothers will headline Summerfest's final Marcus Amphitheater show of 2015. The festival had been struggling to book that final July 4 date, so it settled on an act that may not have the draw of Neil Young or The Rolling Stones, but is familiar with the venue. The neo-roots group played the amphitheater in 2013, when they co-headlined with the Violent Femmes.
We're going to go out on a limb and predict this one won't sell out, but The Avett Brothers will have some company on the bill that should help them fill the seats: roots songwriter Brandi Carlile and jam icon Warren Haynes. "Wait, isn't Warren Haynes supposed to be playing those Grateful Dead reunion shows down in Chicago that weekend?" you ask, as you lower the latest issue of Relix incredulously. Yes he is, but smart money says he'll find a way to make it work.
Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday. There's no word yet on ticket prices or showtime.
