The rumors are true. After weeks of speculation, The Rolling Stones confirmed this morning that they will play Summerfest on Tuesday, June 23 at the Marcus Amphitheater as part of their 15-date "Zip Code" tour of North America. With a capacity of about 23,000, the venue will be by far the smallest on the Stones' tour, which is skipping Chicago in favor of Milwaukee.
The timing of the show is interesting. June 23 is technically the day before Summerfest, which had been scheduled to open on Wednesday, June 24 with Florida Georgia Line headlining the amphitheater. But if any band is worth making an exception for, it's The Rolling Stones. The festival is now billing the Stones concert as "the Ultimate Kick-Off to Summerfest," and offering ticket-holders a complimentary general-admission ticket to Summerfest and access to what they're calling a "official pre-party" featuring two stages of entertainment beginning at 5 p.m. June 23.
And now as an added bonus the festival doesn't have to open its year with Florida Georgia Line.
This will be the Stones' first time in Milwaukee since they played the Bradley Center in 2005. There's no word on ticket prices yet, but given the relative intimacy of the venue, expect them to be pretty expensive. They'll go on sale at 10 a.m. April 13 at the Summerfest Mid-Gate box office, through Ticketmaster or by calling 414-273-2600.
Summerfest will offer pre-sale tickets through its email alerts, with information available through its Facebook and Twitter pages. The pre-sale will run from 10 a.m. April 10 until 10 p.m. April 12, or until inventory runs out. American Express card members will have a leg up over the lowly Stones fans who use Visa: They'll be able to buy tickets beginning April 8.
Update: Ticket prices are $94.40 - $421.95, according to Ticketmaster.
