One of Milwaukee’s oldest craft breweries, Sprecher Brewery will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a free party at Juneau Park on Aug. 28 and 29 with live music and, of course, beer, served from Milwaukee County's Traveling Beer Garden and a pair of Sprecher's tire tap trucks. The first night will feature a rare Milwaukee performance from the pioneering Los Angeles punk band X.
These days X have been splitting their live shows between electric and acoustic material. The band’s latest tour is a bittersweet one, however: The band announced this month that guitarist Billy Zoom will be sitting out the tour as he battles bladder cancer. In a statement announcing a fund to assist with Zoom’s medical costs, the band wrote, “Punk rock and benefits always went hand in hand: you name the cause, and the bands and fans will be there. Now it’s our turn to help Billy Zoom, the wittiest, smartest, nicest, best guitar player & friend I know. I would do anything to help him get better, help take care of his family, and lessen his woes. Billy has begun chemo treatment at Cedars Sinai for Bladder cancer. He has a long road ahead of him but we are confident he’s beat cancer once and he’ll do it again!” Guitarist Jesse Dayton, who has played with Waylon Jennings and Supersuckers, will be filling in for Zoom.
