Funny how the universe works. The last time Waler Salas-Humara played Anodyne he provided updates on scores from the Bucks playoff game during his set. Now with the Bucks-Suns NBA Championship series tied 2-2, he can concentrate on the music. Best known as leader of the Silos, the Arizona-based Salas-Humara’s songs paint pictures, which makes sense because he originally went to college for painting. His recent focus has been a series of abstract horse images. Salas-Humara’s artwork will be for sale as well as that of opener Mekon-founder Jon Langford, whose distinct folk-art inspired paintings of musical and cultural icons is as recognizable as his music.

Bridget Griffith Evans is devoted to figural representations, seductively underpinned by vibrant colors and hints of mystery. Her still lifes often feature solitary objects grounded in spaces built from luminous veils of rich, saturated hues. Her portraits share these same riveting qualities, with protagonists who acknowledge the viewer with shadowed eyes and a keen sense of awareness.

Drawing influence from legendary acts like Mavis Staples and Aretha Franklin, Ruthie Foster developed a unique sound unable to be contained within a single genre. That uniqueness echoes a common theme in Ruthie’s life and career of marching to the beat of her own drum. Her latest album Live at the Paramount, swings back to the days (and nights) when Lady Ella sang Ellington and Sinatra blasted off with Count Basie and Quincy Jones
