I-794 Lake Freeway/Hoan Bridge Project Reaches Halfway Point

Second phase of traffic switch on Hoan to start Friday

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will complete the traffic switch for the second stage of construction on the I-794 Lake Freeway/Hoan Bridge project beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19. It will be completed by 8 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20. A full closure of the roadway will be in place to allow crews to complete the work. Detours will be posted during the closures.

Once completed, motorists will be able to access westbound I-794 from the Jackson entrance ramp. This new configuration will remain in place until work wraps up on the new structures in the fall of 2015. Both eastbound and westbound traffic will be on the newly reconstructed roadway on I-794 and the redecked portion of the Hoan Bridge.

What should be any government's role in roads and transportation? Some think this bridge should have never been re-built, should have been torn down instead. Milwaukee had a twisted history regarding bridges. The 2 main founders, Kilbourn and Juneau spitefully made sure the roads they planned and built on their side of the river did not line up, did not want bridges built for working together, each must have wanted to see the other side fail, maybe to have the winner seize the profit opportunity of the other, that is what the bad part of business is all about anyway, having exclusive control of a market.What did we have before our governments stepped in to this role? We had property owners mark out their land boundaries, and dirt-paths cutting though an owners precious land "just happened". Most owners allowed this as they benefited from it too. If an owner did not want certain people coming through, he could post a guard and make them go around, go through someone else's land. Some enterprising owners negotiated for payment, birth of toll-roads, even if tolls were selective and only charged upon strangers and enemies.How did Wisconsin get its reputation for good roads? The dairy industry. Had to get the milk from the farms to the markets every day before it would spoil. Had to get it through despite winter snow, so we had to plow, had to get it through despite rain and impassible mud, so we had to pave and drain the roads. The whole community benefited so they shared the cost instead of making either the producer-farmer or the hired milk hauler or the retail consumer pay for it all, the costs were shared as a community. That spirit is gone.
