Written by Bob Comfort, the 1991 film Dogfight wasn’t the most flattering look at the casual lives of Americans in the early 1960s. In addition to al of the deep ugliness of racism, sexism and twisted conformity, Comfort added the fictional picture of a couple of 18 year old guys out on the town the night before one of them turns 18. “Birdlace” Eddie and his friends are shipping out to Vietnam. They are competing in what they call, "a dogfight." It's charming: All of them are looking for a woman for a party. They’re competing to find the ugliest one. One of them meets a girl and genuinely starts to feel something. Kind of a strange premise for a retro drama. Evidently it was recently turned into a musical.
A production of the musical will be staged at the Next Act Theatre in early September courtesy of Robby McGhee’s All-In Productions. The show will be directed by McGhee with choreography by Karl Miller. Auditions for the production will be held Jun. 13 and 14 at the Underground Collaborative in the Grand Avenue Mall.
