I’m okay with tattoos and piercings and body modifications. I’m even okay with most of the apps that people seem to be occupying themselves with. Puns, though...with the rise to prominence of competitive punmanship, these “kids these days,” have finally gotten into something a little too weird for me. Puns are for bad journalism. They have no place as a legitimate form of pop art. There. I’ve said it. I’d say it again if I had to.
That being said, far be it from me to keep other people from enjoying something that actually sounds kind of annoying to me...or would if it weren’t for the fact that there are a few really aggressively clever people involved in an upcoming show that’s being performed for a small audience.
Talented former local actor Jordan Gwiazdowski and his brother Jerzy (Gwiazdowski) are on their way off to the 38th Annual O. Henry Pun-Off World Championships. Like anyone preparing for a national competition, the two men need practice. They will be appearing in a free show this coming Monday to help prepare. Sibling Ribaldry: A Punkassed Puntathalon will be hosted by local theatre icon Robby McGhee and Toby Gwiazdowski.
It’s a celebration of elaborate punmanship featuring some really magnetic stage performers, And it’s free. Sibling Ribaldry happens May 4 at 10 p.m. at the Hybrid Lounge on 707 E. Brady St. The event is free of charge. Those in attendance will be asked to sign a release form as the event is being filmed for a documentary.
